Hooked on Worms -Not Drugs Fishing Event

We spent a beautiful Saturday morning in Oroville -Bedrock Park at the Hooked on Worms, Not Drugs Event. They provided poles and worms for free to the kids.....we got in trouble by the park ranger for holding the poles while the girls went to the restroom. LOL they were only gone for 20 minutes :) then it turns out they went potty and then went to the bounce house -priorities ya know.

Was a beautiful day yesterday at the Sacramento Komen Race for the Cure (Breast Cancer Walk/Run). Day started very early, we had to get up at 4 am to make it there by 7 for our team pic -lol which we missed cause we were waiting in a long line of cars to get into the parking lot at 7am. This is just part of our team, these are my co-workers from Four Winds, there were 15 or so out of our team of 20 who walked in the 5K.

For those of you who are from or have ever lived in Chico you know when they cut down the trees in the downtown park and made it the "plaza" we were all upset...so I still miss the trees and nice grass but we are learning to enjoy what it does offer. Ms. T had the best time on Sunday running in the fountain. We enjoyed a littl Jon and Bons and she played to her hearts content -wish I could be this carefree in life, maybe a little lesson for me? :)

So today started out cloudy, but then the sun decided to join us...in part due to the fairly breezy day. Ms. T and her buddy felt like it was really nice out, warm enough (58 degrees) to play outside in her water pool! Not warm enough for me, but obviously great fun for the 3 and 4 year olds whose body temperatures I know run hotter than mine. Glad they had fun.

As most of you know, this past year and a half has been very hectic for me...but come the end of August I will be done with my MPH! For the past 7 weeks I have been in hell, that is the best way to describe biostatistics, this past Friday I took my final after which mom and I planned a hike to Table Mt. It was a much needed stress reliever and a celebration of the ending and beginning of my coursework...I'm now on to environmental health. Hope you enjoy the pics.

So saturday I was home doing homework most of the day, it drizzled on and off but not too much happening with the weather. Finally I tell Ms. T get your shoes on, we'll go to the park and go for a walk.....kaboom baboom...hmm well a little thunder....than a torrent of rain! Okay what now, well we waited a little while and it slowed down so we decided to get our rain coats on and go anyway. It was a beautiful early evening and we saw a beautiful rainbow.

Tooth

As some of you know, Ms. T has what they loosely in lay terms call soft teeth. Basically her enamel sucks and her teeth don't turn black, they disintegrate away -strange. Anyway at the age of 3.5 she's had extensive dental work done, 3 root canals (have some kid version they do), 3 crowns, her two incisors have been back filled (to fill them out as they were fading away) and banded crowns were put on these (similar to a cap), and numerous fillings. Today we had the pleasure of having one of her back teeth pulled! It was what they called sick, it had previously been treated for a cavity, now her gum had a bubble on it and the tissue was inflamed. Now we are at home letting the meds wear off. Each time we go we alternate between either puking for a few hours or being very mean....today we are mean. Hopefully my next post is something fun :).

The family went to ID for a few days to visit family...and friends, along the way took a deture 25 miles off the hwy on a dirt road to the Jordan Craters. Awesome sight. From the parking area we could see a short area of lava flow with sphires, then there was a big "pile" of black "gravel"....strange, wondered why did they stack up a pile of broken up lava rock -they did not. It was the side of a large crater! Luckily T and I walked up the side of it :) Great fun, but scary with a independent 3year old.

Visits from old friends -but young of age :)are the best. (Whew not sure on the grammar of that.)My friend Carrie stopped through, on her special meeting travels, on her way to her new field in WA. In the mid 80's we lived in WA and we shared many a laugh and adventure. The visit wasn't long enough, but she was able to stay the night, finally meet Ms. T, and share a cup of coffee.

I've (once again) started on a mission to be healthier, happier, and there be a little less of me. Anyone have a magic pill to make this happen!? I've added a weight loss ticker to my page, the reason behind this is that I need to be held accountable, I need a spot to publicly track my progress, so that if I get off track I'll be reminded to get me rear in gear!

At the beginning of this month I began Weight Watchers, so far it has been going well. I've had a couple days where I've eaten over my points (Wedding & family outing), but have felt very comfortable and happy with my daily intake.

A 3 year old's perspective -simple

So T and I were driving (well I was) out to the reservation where I am implementing a summer evening program with the kids, she pipes up, where is my grandpa? Just out of the blue. How do you answer your little one, when there is no grandpa and you've already had to also explain about the MIA dad? For those 20 seconds it took me to answer, my tears welled up and I felt so bad that I had to tell her she didn't have a grandpa -cursed the fates that took her Papa (my dad) and the absent grandpa from her dad's side. As is my way and to keep it real I told her that she didn't have a grandpa, as is her way she immediately stated that yes she did! Hmmm what to do now? So I said , welllll you do have a Papa -his picture is hanging up in our house but he's no longer with us. To my amazement she said yes, she had a Papa and his picture is by our room. (Happy as can be she was). She then asked me where my grandpa was, I had to tell her he was only in a picture too, that he had died a long time ago. She was so excited that we both had grandpas....in pictures. I just had to laugh, yes that was true, it was all so simple to her and she didn't feel left out. I know this will change as she grows older and asks more questions, but for now all is well in the Jack household. (I told my mom this story and she said that her and T had a conversation about Papa last week.)

Humboldt Exercising

We went to the Humboldt coast again for work, had wonderful smoke free weather. Barely made it through 299 before they closed it again, it was only open for about 3 hours that day and we made it through, though the side of the road was burning! Anyway, we hiked down to Agate Beach at Patricks Point State Park (steep grade). T practiced some of her yoga moves on the beach and on the hike back up she took a short break on the steps -I didn't have to carry her at all this time, yeah!

Mom, T, and I were able to take a spring vacation and took the long way to Ventura to spend spring break with my brother and his family who were on spring break. We left here, went over the sierras to Mono Lake, Lone Pine (Alabama Hills State Park), Death Valley, and then to Ventura. Spring is here -the desert is alive!

T had a great time watching all her favorite princess characters skating (scaping as she likes to call it). On an up note, we went to our friends mom's house up in Strawberry Valley and had a snow day last Saturday. Ms. T luvvved it!

Our Xmas Vacation

T and I had a very enjoyable winter vacation, it was great to go south and spend time with my bro and his family -T loves her cousins. As a bonus the weather was very nice, the day before xmas it was 70 degrees! This didn't last, but it was still nice. We were able to enjoy the beach, go to Magic Mt. (the day after xmas is a great day to go, hardly any people -they're all shopping), visit my sister-in-law's family from Utah (they were in Anahiem for Dizzyland), and of course just be lazy. Now that I'm back to the real world, I'm not looking forward to the hectic pace that my life tends to be. It' s back to not only being a mom but work, consultant work, school, and whatever else life throws at me. Though I'll have to say that getting my Master's degree has been a dream a long time in the works....so I won't complain too much -anyway my mom is moving from ID to live with us to give a little relief and enjoy time with family while she pursues her dream of going back to school. I hope this new year brings great times and memories for your families -I'm looking forward to all the fun mine brings me.

Well this year we LUUUUVVVV Xmas, T is so excited about all the lights...and wants me to take her into Longs Drugs because there is a Chrissmas Clause riding a bicycle in there. (one of those air blow up santas riding a motorcycle). This is the only Santa she likes, she still screams and backs up when the "real" one tries to speak with her at the mall. Well I've decided to torture myself and applied and was accepted to a distance program offered through San Jose State -to get my Masters of Public Health....which is where I've been for the last week! Orientation, meeting my new cohort & instructors, and attending my first class. So if I look frazzled for the next two years -now you know why. It's an intense 2 year program wherein each class only lasts 6-7 weeks (I don't know how I'm going to make it through Epidemiology in that short of a time), and there is no thesis or final project but a comprehensive test! Just so those of you who are here in Chico know -I'm eternally gratefull for all the help you've given already to help this single mom :). Poor T was abondoned by her mother for 6 days and thank goodness she has a family of friends who love her.

Okay, first you convince your mom that you absolutly have to have the black satin un-practicle over priced (not needed so 14.99 is too much) dress shoes (that are a 1/2 size too big) ....then you decide that they are best suited for helping mom with the gardening. Very stylish!

First Hair Cut

Okay so I finally had to give in and cut T's hair! Her hair was getting out of control, the curls were a constant tangle, it wasn't looking to healthy on the ends and combing hair was...is a battle. So off about 3 inches went, we don't plan on continuing to cut it short, but needed a fresh start so we could grow some pretty long hair.

Sorry for the lapse in posting...we've been on the road! Ventura, Solvang, Pismo Beach, Vallejo (Six Flaggs Discovery Kingdom), and SF. No pics as we were in the Santa Ynez casino, but if you ever get a chance on their (I think 1/month or maybe week) Thursday night Chocolate Lover's Buffett -go! To die for. I did feel a little sick after all that chocolate :( but I feel it was worth it!

We went to a youth EPA campout and T joined in with the teens making thread out of Dogbane sticks, you break off outer shell of branch (seen on table) and then manipulate the inner pith to form thread. Used to twine stuff together. She could't really do it, but she thought she was and that' s all that was important!

We went to the Silver Dollar Fair this past week in Chico, T was too short for most rides, but was able to ride the ponies. I wasn't sure if she would let the guy help her on or even like it. Funny thing was that she never smiled, but never complained, or tried to get off! We did have one hilarious moment (of which I don't believe T was amused), the pony decided to give itself a good whole body "dog" shake in the middle of the ride -T screamed, yet that was short lived, she didn't cry or ask to get off and the guy gave her a reassuring hug and on she rode. That's my girl.

Delicious is one of Tsiava's favorite things to say, which if you're around her enough is kind of funny -she is very selective in what she eats. As is the case here, we were at a work dinner and all she ate was the bread.....with a measuring spoon that was in her bag of toys that we brought to keep ourselves amused with.

Grand Adventures!

I know its been forever since I posted an update. During that time Tsiava and I have been around the world! Okay, well maybe just up and down California and across a few of our great states, but it sure felt like we drove around the world....those of you with little ones feel me. We began our adventure by driving to San Diego, with a side trip to Ventura to drop off our beloved Tsoep dog to my brothers family who would doggie sit for 2.5 weeks. Proceeded to San Diego, stayed there for a few days for work, then flew back to Sacramento to stay there for a few days at a work conference, then the real adventure began -we began our road trip to New Mexico! My friend Rachel, Tsiava and I left Sacramento and drove to Kingman Arizona to vist the West side of the Grand Canyon and the newly built Skywalk (www.grandcanyonskywalk.com). For those of you who don't know what it is I included the link, it's a glass floored u shaped "bridge" that extends out over the Grandcanyon! I'll upload those pics and then later load some of our other adventures. Great to be back.

I was inside my friends house working on some traditional wedding regalia and came outside to check on Tsiava.....what a precious moment. Contently sitting on the porch steps enjoying her fruit. It's funny how some moments just bring a mother a warm feeling and joy. I didn't bother her, but went back inside knowing she was happy as can be, just to sit in the sun and eat fruit. It also reminds me that I need to stop and take a sun and fruit moment myself.

Next Generation

Tsiava and I went down south a couple of weekends ago to be with my brother and his family and were able to have a "play day" with the Herting Family (sisters and their families now known as the G and H Families). The H Family was here from Alaska visiting. Anyway we now have the next generation of Jack children enjoying and learning music from the Hertings!

Oh for the love of a little one. Wrapping her arms tightly around my neck (mostly choking me) in the morning and telling her momma that she loves her. Now does she really understand what it means to say that? Is she just repeating what momma tells her? Don't know, but what I do think that she understands is the resulting action. It makes her momma happy and she gets plenty of hugs and kisses for it......which is love. Happiness, sharing, and affection.

I know it looks sunny out, but it's actually very cold out. I told my mom I felt like I was dressing my child as if she was in Idaho not CA. The layered look was real popular here for the past couple of weeks. Tights, pants, 3 layers on top, hat, and gloves were necessary to play outside at the park. I know we're wimps and just a little spoiled with our mild weather.
